German Doner Kebab seeks 3am weekend licence

A kebab restaurant in Ipswich town centre has applied to extend its opening hours until 03:00 at weekends. The Westgate Street eatery, opened by reality TV star Joey Essex in 2018, currently closes at 23:00.

The big picture: German Doner Kebab was founded in Berlin and has grown to more than 140 restaurants worldwide, with plans for over 1,000 more in development.

The details:

  • The restaurant wants to serve food until 00:00 Sunday to Thursday

  • Weekend hours would be extended until 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays

  • Current operating hours are 11:00 to 23:00, seven days a week

  • The Ipswich branch opened in Westgate Street in 2018

What's next: Ipswich Borough Council's licensing committee will review the application, considering input from:

  • Environmental health officers

  • Suffolk Police

  • Members of the public

The bottom line: The public consultation runs until 12 February, meaning the restaurant could be serving late-night customers by spring, pending the council's decision and any potential objections.
