'Golden Mile' town centre improvement scheme to begin in Ipswich next week

A programme of road and pavement improvements across Ipswich town centre will begin on Monday 27 January. The works will cover 11 locations, including Westgate Street, Princes Street, St Nicholas' Street, the Waterfront and bus station areas.

Why it matters: The 'Golden Mile' scheme aims to resolve defects in areas with high foot traffic, improving both safety and appearance in the town centre.

The big picture: The improvement programme will run from 27 January until 31 March 2025, with works scheduled in phases:

  • Westgate Street (27-31 January)

  • Ipswich Bus Station (3-6 February)

  • Princes Street (6-12 February)

  • King Street (13-14 February)

  • Buttermarket (14-21 February)

  • Dial Lane & St Stephen's Lane (21 February-7 March)

  • Silent Street (10-12 March)

  • St Nicholas' Street (13-14 March)

  • St Peter's Street (17-19 March)

  • Ipswich Waterfront (20-24 March)

  • Arcade Street (24-31 March)

Between the lines: Suffolk Highways confirms all roads and footpaths will remain open and accessible throughout the works, with only small areas cordoned off for safety.

The details: The scheme will:

  • Address defects in areas with high foot traffic

  • Improve pavements and carriageways

  • Maintain access to all areas during works

  • Cordon off small sections while work is underway

The bottom line: All locations will remain accessible during the works, with Suffolk Highways saying they will provide updates as the scheme progresses.
