'Ipswich is a busking friendly town' says council in call for street performers

Ipswich Borough Council is promoting the town centre as an ideal location for street entertainers seeking supportive performance spaces.

Why it matters: Research shows that buskers help create a livelier town centre atmosphere and can increase footfall and sales to nearby businesses.

The big picture: The council welcomes busking without requiring permits or licences for most performances, highlighting prime locations including:

  • The Cornhill

  • Westgate Street

  • Tavern Street

  • Arras Square

  • The Buttermarket

  • Top of Lloyds Avenue near the bus station

  • St Peter's Street

What they're saying: "I've often busked in Ipswich town centre, it always seems to be well appreciated and great opportunities for people starting out in their music careers," says musician Adam Thomas.

Between the lines: While no licence is needed to busk in Ipswich, performers must follow some basic guidelines:

  • Amplification is prohibited between 21:00 and 08:00

  • Performances on Sundays cannot start before 10:00

  • Buskers should keep at least 100 metres away from other performers

  • Those selling merchandise need a Street Trading Licence

  • Charity collections require a Street Collection Permit

The bottom line: Ipswich Borough Council sees street performers as valuable contributors to the town's cultural scene, fitting with their work to promote arts, music, culture and creativity in the area.
