Suffolk Rural College welcomed around 2,000 visitors to its popular spring family farm day on Sunday, 30 March, as the college celebrates 55 years of farming education.

Why it matters: The free event gives local families the opportunity to experience agricultural education firsthand and introduces children to potential future careers in farming and animal care.

The details: Visitors to the Otley campus were treated to a range of activities during the event, which has been running for over five years:

  • Meeting newborn lambs

  • Exploring new animal studies facilities

  • Watching showjumping displays

  • Playing sports on the college quadrangle

  • Purchasing locally sourced food from vendors including Yum Tum Tree Fudge

What they're saying: Charlotte Rossiter, who oversaw the organisation of the day, called it "one of the best yet."

"We are always delighted to welcome guests to our Suffolk Rural campus. This year, we are celebrating 55 years of farming and that will be one of our big themes at the upcoming Suffolk Show," he said.

From the visitors: The event attracted families from across the region:

"My daughter goes along to a therapy farm once a week and she absolutely adores the animals - so we had to come up so she could see the sheep," said Samantha Mann from Colchester. "I think what the college is doing is brilliant and because it is free it has given everyone a chance to come."

Six-year-old Emily Wilkins from Needham Market summed up the day succinctly: "It's been baarilliant."

Behind the scenes: Students helped run the event, gaining valuable experience in public engagement.

Vakaris Pocius, 18, from Ipswich, who is studying a level two course in agriculture at Suffolk Rural, said: "It's been rewarding and it's important so that children can experience different careers that they might want to pursue when they are older."

For businesses: Local vendors also benefited from the high turnout.

Karen from Really Awesome Coffee said: "This was our first time at Suffolk Rural and the first impressions are very good. It's nice to do something local. I think it's a great idea to host a free event like this."

What's next: For those who missed out on tickets for this event, the college will be hosting their annual Big Day Out on Saturday 10 May 2025.

The bottom line: The "baarilliant" success of the spring family farm day sets a positive tone for Suffolk Rural College's upcoming 55-year farming celebration at the Suffolk Show.

The British heavyweight champion and diehard Ipswich Town fan could see his ambition to fight at his beloved club become reality after a new licence application.

Why it matters: Ipswich Town Football Club has applied for a variation of its licence at Portman Road. The application has requested boxing or wrestling entertainment to take place between 12:00 and 22:30 on Sundays to Thursdays, as well as 12:00 to 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

What they're saying: Speaking with the BBC, an ITFC spokesperson said: "Following infrastructure improvements to Portman Road over the past couple of years, it will not be uncommon for the stadium to apply for various licences to host events across different sectors; this is just one of many that will start to appear."

For context: British heavyweight champion and Ipswich Town fan Fabio Wardley said it was his "dream" to fight at the ground.

In October 2024, Wardley told BBC Radio Suffolk he wanted to fight at Portman Road, saying: "It's still the dream and it's on the cards".

"If anything it's closer than ever now because being with Frank Warren my promoter, he's done stadium shows before and he knows how to put them on.

"When it happens is still a massive question but pieces are definitely falling into place for this."

The bigger picture: Ipswich Town chief executive, Mark Ashton, said in November 2024 that the club had been in discussion with Wardley about appearing at the ground and that it was in the "pipeline" but not "imminent".

The details: The club has also requested to be permitted to include live music performances, playing of recorded music, dance performances as well as alcohol sales and late night refreshments.

Portman Road underwent a series of improvements last summer to prepare the ground for Premier League football, including new media facilities, more executive boxes and the introduction of safe standing areas at the ground for the first time.

What's next: Posters advertising the change have been put up in the area around the ground with people able to have their say on the change until 24 April.
