Job description

The company

Ipswich.co.uk is the only free and independent local news publication for Ipswich. We report the stories that matter and champion the people and organisations making our town a better place.

Since launching last August, we've quickly become a trusted source of local news and information for thousands of residents who love our quality reporting, skimmable content and uninterrupted reading experience.

The role

This is an exciting and rare opportunity to join a local media business at the very start of its journey. It's a chance to shape a better future for local media and the town.

As a Community Impact Reporter, you will champion local charities, nonprofits and community groups in Ipswich and the surrounding areas.

This will include:

  • Producing news articles and editorial features on the activities and impact of local nonprofits and the businesses that support them

  • Managing relationships with press officers and communications teams

  • Uploading events to our What's On section

  • Promoting content on social media and encouraging others to do the same

The requirements

No formal qualifications are required, and training will be provided.

However, you must:

  • Have exceptional written and verbal communication skills

  • Be able to produce high-quality written content quickly and accurately

  • Be passionate about journalism and writing

  • Have a genuine desire to support and champion local nonprofits

  • Live within 10 miles of Ipswich and be very familiar with the town

  • Be able to quickly learn and use software, including content management systems and productivity tools

  • Own a computer or laptop and a smartphone

The package

  • Annual salary of £29,120 pro rata

  • 12 hours per week

  • Fully remote

  • Flexible working hours

  • 28 days annual leave, including bank holidays, pro rata

  • Pension plan

To apply

Please email editor@ipswich.co.uk with an overview of your experience, why you're interested in the role, and why you believe you're a good fit.

Successful applicants will be invited to a 30-minute video interview on Google Hangouts and asked to complete a short practical assessment that will take approximately one hour.

Our commitment to inclusion

We strive to build a team that reflects a wide variety of skills, perspectives and backgrounds. We believe in equality of opportunity and welcome candidates from all backgrounds, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and belief.

Please let us know if you are disabled or have a long-term health condition and would like support in applying for any of our roles or if you require any reasonable adjustments in the recruitment process.
