Wildlife Wise small grant fund opens for Suffolk conservation projects

Applications are now being accepted for grants of up to £5,000 to support wildlife protection initiatives along the Suffolk coast.

Why it matters: The funding aims to balance recreational activities with conservation of the Suffolk Coast's internationally designated habitats, which include Special Protection Areas for rare birds and Special Areas of Conservation.

The details: The application period runs until 21 May 2025, with awards to be made by 20 June.

Eligible projects may include:

  • Implementing new signage

  • Improving footpaths

  • Creating designated dogs-off-lead areas

  • Installing small areas of fencing to protect ground nesting birds

For context: Wildlife Wise is the new brand for the Suffolk Coast Recreational Disturbance and Mitigation Strategy (RAMS), created to prevent additional recreational pressure on important coastal and heathland sites.

The bigger picture: The Suffolk Coast has several international-level designations reflecting its importance, including Special Protection Areas, Special Areas of Conservation, and Ramsar Sites (wetlands of international importance).
