Ipswich Borough Council's new £15 matchday parking charge, which came into effect on Tuesday, ranks among the highest in English football, contradicting the council's claim it aligns with other Premier League clubs' rates.
The big picture: The council defended the recent price increases by saying the £15 charge is "significantly lower than car parks close to other Premier League grounds" and addresses "significant congestion" around Portman Road on matchdays.
Yes, but: The new fee makes Ipswich Town's stadium matchday parking among the most expensive in English football. This is despite being a newly promoted club located outside of London, where car parking is more limited – especially at stadiums like the Emirates where resident-only parking is in operation on matchdays.
What's next: The charges now apply to all council-operated long-stay car parks on Portman Road, Princes Street and West End, from three hours before kick-off until an hour after the first whistle. The council has confirmed no discount will be in place for Blue Badge holders.
The bottom line: Despite council claims about pricing alignment with Premier League venues, Ipswich Town fans now face some of the highest matchday parking charges in English football, surpassing even established top-flight clubs like Liverpool (£5) and Manchester City (£6).
