Ipswich Town have confirmed the signing of Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers after protracted negotiations.

The details: Szmodics joins Town after prolonged negotiations with Blackburn which culminated in agreeing a fee of £9m plus add-ons which could rise to £11m, according to BBC Sport.

The 28-year-old netted 27 goals last season, making him the Championship's top scorer. He’s picked up right where he left off this campaign, scoring three goals in two appearances for Blackburn.

A change in strategy: This signing represents a shift in strategy for Ipswich under Kieran McKenna and Mark Ashton. While they typically prioritise younger players with potential to increase in value, Szmodics, at 28 and coming off what has arguably been his best season by some margin, is likely at his peak transfer value.

What Szmodics offers: If he can translate his Championship form to the Premier League, the attacker could play a pivotal role in Ipswich's top-flight campaign.

Here’s what to look out for:

  • Versatility: Szmodics offers McKenna tactical flexibility. His adaptability allows him to slot in as an attacking midfielder, second striker, or even out wide.

  • Goal threat: With 33 goals in 79 games for Blackburn, Szmodics has a proven track record of scoring in recent seasons. His clinical finishing could be crucial for The Tractor Boys' survival, easing the burden on Delap and Hirst.

  • Work rate and pressing: Szmodics is known for his relentless work rate and high pressing, aligning perfectly with McKenna's style of play. This could lead to more turnovers and quick transitions for Ipswich to exploit.

The bottom line: While representing a departure from Ipswich's usual transfer strategy, Szmodics' goalscoring record, versatility, and work rate make him a potentially vital addition as the club looks to establish itself in the top flight.
