New AR trail brings Ipswich history to life

A free augmented reality (AR) adventure is taking over the Ipswich town centre this summer, allowing families to explore local history and attractions through their smartphones.

Why it matters: The interactive trail combines education and entertainment, encouraging residents and visitors to explore Ipswich while learning about its past and future.

The details:

  • The trail runs daily until 4 September, spanning from Christchurch Park to the Waterfront

  • Users download an app to access seven interactive stops featuring Ipswich-themed characters

  • Each stop offers unique themes, games, and storytelling elements

  • Participants who complete the trail receive free children's book or audiobook prizes

  • Mabel the Owl highlights protecting the environment

  • The Golden Lion symbolizes Ipswich's future

  • Rosie the Rhino represents local attractions

  • Wolsey's Cat brings local history to life

  • Sammy the Sea Squirt encourages movement

What they're saying: "This Trail celebrates a historic past, vibrant present, and promising future for Ipswich while getting our 'adventurers' moving and exploring old and new areas of town," says Councillor Neil MacDonald, Ipswich Borough Council Leader.

How to participate:

  1. Download the Digby and Beattie app from Google Play or the App Store

  2. Follow the map to each of the seven stops

  3. Interact with characters and complete activities

  4. Claim your prize at Ipswich County Library or The Hold on the Waterfront

The bottom line: This AR trail offers families a fun, free summer activity while showcasing Ipswich's heritage and future prospects.
