Local darts star Ryan Meikle will face 'Queen of the Palace' Fallon Sherrock in the first round of the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace tonight.

Why it matters: The winner will progress to a blockbuster second-round match against teenage sensation Luke Littler, with Meikle seeking his third appearance in the tournament's second round.

The big picture: Despite a challenging year on the professional tour, world number 62 Meikle enters the match as strong favourite with bookmakers, with his best performance of 2024 coming at the UK Open where he reached the fifth round in March.

By the numbers:

  • Meikle has earned £78,500 in ranking tournaments over the past two years

  • Bookmakers have priced him at 1/4 (1.25) to win the match

  • This will be his fourth appearance at Alexandra Palace

  • Sherrock is making her fifth World Championship appearance

  • The 30-year-old has won three Women's Series events in 2024

  • She is priced at 4/1 (4.00) to cause an upset

Between the lines: While Sherrock made history during the 2019-20 championship by becoming the first woman to win matches at the tournament, defeating Ted Evetts and Mensur Suljovic, she has struggled to replicate that form in subsequent appearances.

Sherrock remains a significant draw for both crowds and media, meaning Meikle will likely face a partisan atmosphere at the iconic London venue.

The bottom line: While Meikle enters the match as clear favourite, the unique atmosphere of the World Championship and Sherrock's previous success at the venue make this a compelling first-round encounter and one to watch.

The government has announced a £6.8 million funding boost for Local Net Zero Hubs in England to support Great British Energy with local clean power projects.

Why it matters: The initiative aims to develop local clean power projects that align with the government's Clean Power 2030 ambition, with direct benefits for Suffolk organisations, including East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Norfolk And Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

The details: A new Memorandum of Understanding will task the Hubs with assisting GB Energy, the new publicly owned energy company, to identify and develop clean energy projects.

The Local Net Zero Hubs will continue to focus on:

  • Attracting commercial investment into low-carbon projects

  • Increasing the number, quality, and scale of local net zero projects

  • Supporting a national knowledge transfer programme

What they're saying: Maxine Narburgh, Regional Director of the Greater South East Net Zero Hub, said: "The work of the Local Net Zero Hubs complements the mission of GB Energy, providing opportunities to deliver a local place-based pipeline of clean energy projects.

"The additional funding from the government and alignment with GB Energy is a real vote of confidence in the essential work carried out by the Local Net Zero Hubs."

By the numbers: The announcement is part of a wider clean energy package that includes:

  • £5 million for a new Great British Energy Community Fund (previously the Community Energy Fund)

  • £10 million for a Mayoral Renewables Fund

  • Funding for rooftop solar installations in 200 schools and 200 hospitals

The bottom line: Public sector organisations and community groups in Suffolk needing support with net zero projects can contact the Greater South East Net Zero Hub at info@gsenetzerohub.org.uk, with details about the next funding round to be published soon.
