A new urban art programme called Wild Walls is set to transform Ipswich this summer and autumn, offering young people aged 14-30 the chance to create murals and virtual reality graffiti art alongside established street artists.

Why it matters: This initiative offers a unique opportunity for local youth to work alongside established street artists, transforming Ipswich's urban landscape while developing their artistic skills.

The big picture: Art Eat Events and The Subversiv Collective are bringing creativity to central Ipswich through "Wild Walls," a programme funded by Arts Council England, Ipswich Borough Council and Ipswich Central.

It aims to invigorate the town's cultural scene through a series of workshops and a culminating festival.

Key details:

  • Participants will create murals and virtual reality graffiti art

  • Workshops led by renowned artists, including ATMA, Woskerski, Nathan Murdoch, and Catalina Carvajal

  • VR graffiti art to be exhibited at the University of Suffolk

  • The programme concludes with a festival open to all ages

What they're saying:

  • Iona Hodgson, Art Eat Events Co-Director: "This is a great opportunity for the young people of Ipswich to get involved in lots of exciting activities over the summer and autumn."

  • Ian Dance of The Subversiv Collective, says the project will be "empowering for the young people, rewarding for the artists, and great for civic pride."

  • Claudia West, Arts Council England praised the festival for "involving young people in inspiring artistic experiences and benefiting Ipswich's cultural landscape."

What's next:

The bottom line: Wild Walls offers a chance for Ipswich's youth to make their mark on the town, learn from professionals, and contribute to a cultural event that promises to engage the entire community.
