Suffolk charity hits £100,000 winter support target, urges more to apply

Why it matters: Following the government's decision to withdraw winter fuel support for nearly 20,000 pensioners in Ipswich last year, the funding could help residents manage their heating costs during the coldest months, with grants available to cover gas, electricity and heating oil expenses.

The big picture: The Surviving Winter appeal has awarded just over 40 grants so far, but the Foundation believes many more eligible residents could benefit from the support.

Support available: A grant could provide:

• £175 towards gas or electricity costs

• £350 for 500 litres of heating oil

Key eligibility: Residents can apply if they:

• Are aged 66 or above

• Live in Suffolk

• Are not receiving pension credit

• Have an income of no more than £20,000 (single) or £24,000 (double)

• Have savings of no more than £5,000
